Select Space Self-Storage is the first facility for a novel self-storage operator. It is a 96,000 square foot 2-story self-storage building on a 3.55 acre sloping site on County Road 42 in Prior Lake, MN. One of the main site planning goals was to maximize the buildable area for the project, while not creating a forced or crowded feeling around the neighboring sites.
The building is a light gauge steel framed structure with an insulated metal panel exterior. The scale of the facades is controlled by the variations used in the color and texture, as well as the plan/layout configuration. Transparency at the office and drop-off areas help define entry and connection points. Windows are also utilized on the highway side of the building to reveal storage doors which define the building’s use to the public and to create an architectural focal point. These well-lit, transparent areas as well as the randomized, decorative/linear lighting adds a unique and attention-grabbing visual appeal in the evening.
